Icon Cinema OKC, a newly renovated movie theater located in the heart of the city, is quickly becoming a popular destination for locals.
Owner, Samson Snell, spared no expense in a multimillion-dollar renovation. This cinema boasts state-of-the-art technology and luxurious amenities, all while keeping costs low.
An eight-month renovation turned this 1970s building, located just off of Northwest 23rd Street, into a modern and inviting space for moviegoers.
Samson purchased the building because he wanted to be able to fully invest in the quality of the movie experience.
In each of the 10 theater rooms, you’ll find a superior sound system and luxurious reclining chairs with adjustable footrests and headrests, as well as USB ports to keep your phone charging while you enjoy the show.
The movie screens themselves also won’t disappoint. Each screen stretches from wall-to-wall, with the smallest screen sitting at 30 feet wide, giving viewers an immersive experience.
But the theater’s appeal doesn’t stop at its large screens and high-end technology.
Samson’s goal was to make the cinema accessible to everyone, which is why ticket prices are some of the lowest you’ll find in the metro.
Tuesdays are a great day to pop in for a show, as all movies are only $6 all day long.
If you enjoy snacks and drinks with your movie but don’t like waiting in line, you’ll especially love the do-it-yourself drink stations, as well as the condiments bar, giving you the option for free refills whenever you want, and the ability to customize your snacks the way you prefer.
For those with a sweet tooth, you’ll find Dippin’ Dots ice cream over in the corner – something you won’t currently find at any other movie theater in the city.
Perhaps one of the best things about this cinema is that it is locally owned, with the profits going back into the community.
When asked why he wanted to open a movie theater, Samson replied, “We all have to make a living somehow. And I wanted to do something that makes people happy.”
He also comes from a family history of cinemas, with his parents opening a couple of small movie theaters when he was younger. This is where his passion and experience for the movie business began.
“We’re a social business,” says Samson. And it is evident in the way he interacts with his customers.
He loves people and can often be found in the lobby, shaking hands and greeting his guests.
“A cinema in this community needs to be here long term,” he added.
In a world where large chain movie theaters dominate the market, Icon Cinema in Oklahoma City offers a refreshing change of pace.
Samson has created a space that is not just a place to watch movies, but a place to build community and create lasting memories.
